Dress Like a Nerd

During the summer months, the kids' school has different themes each week, and on Fridays, the theme is culminated by having the kids dress up as something pertaining to that week.

This week's theme was "Science", so today was "Dress Like a Nerd".  I didn't put much thought into it.  In fact, we often don't participate in the theme if a:) I forget or b:) I forget.  But today, I remembered, and when I told Carter, he said, "Mama, what's a nerd?"

Try explaining that to your kid.

"Someone who's smart... " Wait, I don't want to say that.  "Someone who gets good grades in school."  Nope, try again. Finally I just told him that I would show him what a nerd was.  Then I proceeded to pick out his clothes.

I found the smallest polo shirt in his drawer and the ugliest pair of denim shorts he owned (seriously, these are like a back-up to a back-up pair) and told him he had to wear a belt.  I buttoned his shirt up all the way to the top and when I pulled his pants up [high], he yelped, "Mah-muh... that's TOO high!"

A small price to pay to be the best dressed, I suppose.

I wasn't fully dressed yet, so I finished my morning routine while Nick picked out his shoes.  A couple of minutes later, Carter proudly came running into the bathroom and proclaimed that I look at his shoes.  I nearly fell over I was laughing so hard.  Good call on the socks, Dad.

I can already hear him explaining this one to his future therapist.

P.S. You probably noticed that I said nothing about Olivia dressing like a nerd.
1. I don't think she owns anything that I could have turned into "nerdy" clothes.
2. Her normal teacher is on vacation and the potty train has been choo-chooing right on past her this week, so I knew she wouldn't be in whatever clothes I dressed her in for very long at all.

That is too funny! I would have been totally stumped on explaining "nerd" too. Eva asked me what spoiled meant the other day after we read it in a book. Ugh.

This is so funny!! Yall did a great job. Just today Kevin and I were watching Leah re-organize her stuff for the 75th time since she woke up and he said "Do you think she's gonna be a nerd?" My reply... "I can only hope!" (Tell Carter you don't have to dress like a nerd to be a nerd... that will really confuse the issue)
